How to care for your succulents

Keeping your succulents happy and healthy when kept indoors does require a little attention. Here are a few tips to help keep them looking their best.

Watering

Many think of succulents as ‘desert’ plants that don’t require much water. This is not true! Succulents thrive when watered well. However it is so important to let the soil dry out completely and stay dry for a few days before watering again. Light misting with water will keep them alive for a while but they will need a good drink eventually.

Most of the pots that my arrangements are made in have drainage holes so be sure to put them on a plate when you water them. Other pots without drainage holes have a layer of charcoal in the bottom to help with absorbing water.

Also a good point to note is that during the cooler months your succulents will need even less water.

In a simple review, only water your succulents when the soil is COMPLETELY dry.

Light

Another tip for keeping them happy is ensuring they get as much light as possible. Placing your succulents near a window that gets light all day is the best if they are kept indoors. If you can’t do this then the brightest window in your house will also help.

Another thing you can do is pop them out in the morning sun for a few of hours. If you do this just be sure that during summer they are not in the full sun as this may burn them.

I hope these tips help take the stress out of caring for your succulents!

Remember even if you are a “plant killer” succulents will generally look good for a few weeks 🙂

Happy growing!
